I like my skincare with a decent dose of natural and an even bigger dose of low-maintenance.
I would much prefer to spend time with my husband over coffee in the morning then spend half and hour in the bathroom grooming or plying on the make up. And did someone say sleep? I’m always happy to take up the option of getting a little more sleep – and this will only increase when we have a new baby in the house!
So, I thought I would share a few of my favourite things here that are a staple in a low maintenance kind of girl’s tool box.
Good for any lady really, not just pregnant ones.
This stuff is the real deal. It ticks the usefulness effective box and the no-nasties box for me.
The Go-to range fits my ready in a minute kind of lifestyle, completely foolproof, simple, easy, great value and of course, effective. We like that.
The range was created by none other than cosmetic and skincare guru Zoe Foster-Blake, author of Amazing Face, former beauty editor who has probably tried every brand out there and still came up with her own. And it’s better I truly believe so.
But in her own words –
“This is skin care minus the confusion. There are no irritants or nasties, no faux-science (“Now with added Wrinkleflickatox™ and Moisturemagic® particles!”) and no outrageous claims. We just make excellent skin care that you will enjoy using, and your skin will love.”
And it’s true!
Pretty packaging that’s also environmentally friendly, 100% natural scents, NO mineral oils, parabens, sulfates, silicones, GMOs, synthetic colours or fragrances.
And all Go-to products are 100% safe to use in pregnancy. The founder of Go-to Zoe Foster-Blake was pregnant for most of the trial period of the range. This is a great comfort to many pregnant women who have been using ‘active’ products for some time with great results, are having pregnancy related break-outs of skin changes and can’t seem to find a product that does the job but without the retinoids, retinol or salicylic acid.
So my two favourite Go-to products are Properly Clean and Exfoliating Swipeys.
Go-to Properly Clean
A cleanser that actually cleans properly. Being a foaming cleanser it definitely gives a good sense of the cleaning without that harsh tight feeling you get after other cleansers. I have tried cream cleansers before and I find my face never feels clean, the mascara is still under my eyes and I can feel an oily residue left behind. Not so with Properly Clean.
Just a sweetly clean face in one or two pumps of the bottle.
In Go-To Words –
“Low levels of non-irritating Willow Bark Extract (an extremely gentle version of salicylic acid), ensures your skin is thoroughly clean but never dry or unbalanced, while the all-natural silky soft mousse leaves your complexion smooth, hydrated and happy.”
Excellent for all skin types even the most sensitive. I’m really sensitive to smell (more so even now) and often avoid most highly scented products but I love the gentle, sweet fruity smell of Properly Clean.
Go-to Exfoliating Swipeys
Skincare magic in 1 minute – literally.
We are told to exfoliate our skin every so often, usually with harsh scrubs with beads in them, sugar scrubs or salt scrubs or exfoliants using rice bran powder or crushed up nut shells. Especially if you have a few break outs, scrubbing into them with a physical scrub can often make the situation much worse, and often I find the scrub itself it it’s high in oil, leaves an oil slick behind.
But exfoliating is good for our skin, encouraging the healthy regeneration of skin cells. I have spoken before about my love of Aspect products that use safe and effective chemical (scary word) exfoliants called AHA’s and BHA’s. These are actually naturally forming acids (another scary word) that speed up the turn over of the outer layer of skin cells.
This means fresher, clearer more radiant skin and if you are using moisturiser or a serum, they’re then that much more effective and moisturising. There is definitely such a thing as over-exfoliation, so it’s good to be mindful of that and most essential to use sunscreen during the day because your skin may seem more sensitive.
These disposable cotton pads are soaked in a mixture of lactic acid (the gentlest of AHA’s and well documented for effectiveness and safety) and hydrating essential oils. They are safe during pregnancy and their usage easily follows a routine of ‘I think it’s been about a week so maybe time for a Swipey.’ It’s like a cheat’s way to good skin.
Once or twice a week, after your nightly cleanse you swipe one of these pre-soaked pads over your face for about a minute and then rinse off. Moisturise as normal and that’s it, done.
Aspect Phytostat 9 Moisturiser
This 4 in 1 cream is my favourite moisturiser of all time. Nourishing but not too thick and cloying, suitable for day and night (although it lacks sunscreen protection for day time wear), comes in an airless pump bottle which maintains the integrity of the product and keeps the bacteria out. It uses Shea butter, Jojoba oil and Sea Buckthorn Fruit Oil for ultimate hydration without the grease.
Plus it can also be used as an eye cream.
It doesn’t get easier or more versatile than that
Pump a pea sized amount and use on clean face morning and night or just at night.
Phytotstat 9 is part of the Aspect range that I have spoken about previously on The Balance Point(e) Instagram page. It is a clinic-only cosmeceutical product so you will have to find a clinic near you that stocks this brand and can advise you correctly on other skincare concerns.
Aspect is made by Advanced Skin Technology which also houses many other great cosmeceutical brands and you can search on their website here for a clinic near you. There is a huge variety and you will easily find somewhere to pick this one up.
I mentioned that I’m low-maintenance.
Confession – so low-maintenance that I have never moisturised my body because it all just seemed to take too long and I don’t like feeling all oily before bed and certainly not in the mornings when I’m about to start sweating at work.
But I do have a natural pregnancy-induced low-level concern of stretch marks. Although there is no evidence to suggest that lathering on moisturiser or oils prevents them at all and you’re most likely better off taking fish oil tablets to hydrate the skin’s cell and strengthen the cell membrane, I thought it still a good idea to try. And I take fish oil tablets when I remember too!
So by trying, I mean when I remember or I haven’t already jumped into my pyjamas and forgotten meanwhile, I use this rather lovely Massage Oil by one of my favourite Natural Skin Care brands.
The Weleda oil contains almond oil and vitamin E enriched wheat germ oil as well as arnica extract which is meant to help keep the skin firm and nourished. I particularly like that it’s inoffensive in aroma and not too greasy when you’re finished massaging which is good news also for clothing and sheets.
Use liberally on stomach, legs, buttocks and breasts during pregnancy and afterwards. There is no reason at all that this is only for pregnancy though, use liberally at any time – or just when you remember like I do!
The best part of this new found moisturising routine though? Getting to connect with my growing baby inside when I rub my belly!
Weleda is an amazing brand and I look forward to using all of their Natural Baby Products for our new arrival. Weleda has been around since the 1920’s and still believe natural ingredients truly provide what a body needs to be vibrant, beautiful and well. Read more about this lovely brand here.
And that’s just some of my favourite low-maintenance natural skincare products that ensure I’m never hanging around in the bathroom too long.
